Two Words ......
Making my life a lot easier this week. If you have not ever seen a Fat Boy before, let me say that they are wonderful pet beds, ( I am very discriminating ).
Derby, after he just came home on Friday. His baby (fox) is in the background.
My little Derby had emergency surgery over the weekend for his disk's in his back.
One day he is walking, the next he is not. The reason for this post is to educate; if your pet experiences paralysis in his / her hind quarters please take them to the vet A.S.A.P.!
The window of opportunity is very small 12 - 24 hours to get your pet help before permanent paralysis sets in. Fortunately for us we were able to get Derby to a vet in 12 hours, our resident veterinarian Dr. Robert Poteet saw Derby and referred him to Dr. Paul Dean orthopedic surgeon for animals (the only board certified in the Tulsa Metro area).
I had wanted to post on a wonderful event to raise finds for the Tulsa ASPCA which was this past Thursday evening. Alas, things happen and we were in the surgical unit instead of the pet gala.
Derby came thru surgery just fine, he is resting at home.He did have ruptured disks and we really have no idea how they occurred.We are extremely hope full that he will be trying to walk in the next few weeks. Kennel rest is the best and recommended, but in the day while I am working at home I let him stay on his Fat Boy. The thing I like about the Fat Boy is that it is a heavy grade nylon that can easily be wiped and washed. It is also filled with tiny styrofoam beads that move with your pet.
Derby is resting very comfortably and I believe it has something to do with the bedding.
Derby resting today, his poor little back where they shaved the area for surgery.
Lots of R&R this coming week, I am really thank full for proactive veterinarian's in Tulsa.
La Maison Fou is not advertising for Fat Boy, just recommending a great product!

Oh thanks Jane;
He is on the mend, a slow road but he will get there!
Have a great day,

Oh no, I went through the same thing during the snowstorm at Christmastime last year. My dachsy, Sister, ruptured her disks and I had to rush her on a Sat. night to OSU for surgery. It took ten years off my life. Sister is doing fine but does have a little hitch in her hind get along. They wanted to do another surgery later, to laser the disks so it won't happen again, but I haven't done it yet. I couldn't believe how expensive the first surgery was. But, Sister and Emmy are like my children, so... Hope Derby gets better fast. Sister was supposed to be crated for 3 weeks, but I just held her most of that time.
Thanks Donna;
Derby is resting peacefully and he is very alert.
I suppose we just need more time.
Thanks for commenting,
